Fair Winds and Following Seas. Our Dad, Robert Anthony Byrne, Captain USN(R), of Bakersfield, California, passed away in the comfort of his home on Friday, June 3, 2022 with his family at his side, he was 86. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1936, Dad enlisted in the US Navy after a semester of study at John Carroll University, then received his commissioning and baccalaureate from the United States Naval Academy in June, 1960.Dad served his country in uniform as a submariner and as a civilian for the Navy with the Department of Defense as an engineer and program manager until his retirement in 1993.
Dad was the consummate patriot, with the red, white, and blue, there was the ever-present Navy Blue & Gold. Dad was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a shipmate and a friend, who saw to the needs of others ahead of his own. Taking care of his family was his priority, and he was a devout catholic in both words and deeds. Dad gave of his time to both Saint Philip the Apostle and Saint Francis of Assisi parishes in Bakersfield and became part of their Eucharistic ministries and supported their efforts with the Society of Saint Vincent DePaul.
Dad was predeceased by his wife and soulmate (Patricia), parents (Richard and Ann), brother (Fred), sister (Pat Longar), granddaughter (Angela Addington), and grandson (Travis Cook).
Dad is survived by his five children - Mike Byrne (Delores), Kathy Cook, Denise Addington, Leslie Barkman (John), and David Addington (Kelly); 7 grandchildren (Bryana Seraile (David), Lindsay Cook, Timothy Meyers, Nickolas Meyers, Joseph Addington, Joshua Meyers, Ryan Byrne (Joelle)), 4 ½ greatgrandchildren (Ari Seraile, Aiden Seraile, Samara Seraile, Collin Byrne, and Isaiah Seraile-due in August), and of course Patricia’s very loving family – her two sisters, Janice Holder and Norma McDonald (Curtis) and her brother John Luttrell (Marian). Robert and Patricia now peacefully rest in the arms of our Lord.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held June 28, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi church, 900 H Street with a Rosary at 9:30 AM. Burial will follow at 1:15 PM at the Bakersfield National Cemetery.
