Bakersfield — After a lifetime of loving and caring for her family, sowing wisdom and laughs in equal measure, our sweet mom passed peacefully.
Colleen Coen Schierenbeck was born February 17, 1926, in Madrid, NM, and passed January18, 2023, in Bakersfield, CA, at 96 after a long life well lived, 61 years spent with her beloved husband Dan Hanel. She met the handsome young Marine through her brother, and the two were peas in a pod from the start. She earned a master’s degree from UC Berkeley and became an educator. She quit teaching to raise her children but never stopped educating in her subtle way. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles, family pets, and spending time outdoors with dad.
She is survived by her children Greg (Mary) Hanel of Bakersfield, CA, Clay (Yvette) Hanel of Fairfield, CA, Dan (Jacqueline) Hanel of Brentwood, CA, and son-in-law Lance Smith of Redding, CA, 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Dan, daughter Jill Smith, brother Frank and parents Lloyd and Mabel Schierenbeck.
The family would like to thank Amalia Necer and the loving staff of St. Catherine’s Home Care and Jennifer with Bristol Hospice for their compassionate care.
